Ah, To Sing Is A Wonderful Thing!

What with Barbershop, musical theater, and voice lessons, I've been thinking about various kinds of singing. I find that I like musical theater and Barbershop noticeably more than classical music. I think I like Barbershop due to the fact that it was one of the first kinds of "choral" singing I ever did, and it's just an interesting way to sing. Plus, it's very rewarding to hear amazing overtones when you sing well. :)

I'm not really sure as to why I like musical theater more than classical singing, though. Perhaps there's enough difference in the style. Maybe it's the fact that most of the classical songs I've learned so far seem somewhat sad, but then again, I really like songs like If I Can't Love Her. Whatever the difference is, I find that I like musical theater singing quite a bit. I'm practicing what I hope will be my song for Fiddler auditions - Santa Fe from Newsies - and I really enjoy the sound of it. Is there more inherent beauty in some musical theater songs than in most classical songs? Is it just a personal preference? It's not as if I like every theater song more; I've looked through other possibilities for audition songs, but I find that I don't really like the words, the music, or both. Some songs I really wished I could have done because the words were amazing, but then I played through and found that the music didn't really sound very good. I do like my classical songs, as well, but whenever I have a Barbershop song or a theater song, I never seem to end up practicing the classical ones...

I agree with you. Barbershop is a beautiful art form. To hear different notes sung in this harmonious manor makes me remember how awesome a God we serve. It is exciting to remember that He created this. Just remember the amazing vocalists you know and then try to compare them with the very God who brought all things into existence. It would be beyond words to describe how perfectly amazing it would be to hear God sing.
I think by classical music you mean "Frank Sinatra", "Bing Crosby", and such. I believe I tend to enjoy musical theater over the classical style of music for one, I love the composition of the music, and two, I find the words to be more passionate and meaningful (although not in some cases). I tend to side with Barbershop and Orchestral yet cannot decide which I favor most.

Thank you for this post. Perhaps I shall post on music soon.

I'm actually not familiar with the style of music done by Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby. By "classical" music, I mean more operatic style. Since Christina Maraldo is my voice teacher, and she's very good at opera, she's been helping me to learn songs like that. I've practiced one in another language and one in English, based off of Shakespeare. I like the songs generally, although I also like English songs better than songs in other languages, but I just seem to like Barbershop and musical theater more.
